I Need Shelter

Monterey and San Benito Counties offer a comprehensive system of Emergency Shelter Programs, each serving different populations and family structures.

Some shelters have waiting lists and require pre-screening, while others provide services on a first-come, first-served basis. Some shelters have a limit to the number of nights you can stay, while others have no limit at all.

It is important to know what is expected of you, so please ask lots of questions, write things down, and ask for copies (if any) of documents that state their program rules.

Access the Service Provider Network through CARS

Emergency shelters are not a permanent solution to your homelessness. Instead, use them as a stepping stone into a broader network of services that can help lead you into permanent housing. Most shelters have caseworkers who can do a Coordinated Assessment and Referral System (CARS) survey. The Coordinated Assessment and Referral System (CARS) is the referral system in which all federally-funded homeless housing programs must receive their clients from. Upon check-in, ask an intake worker to connect you with that person.
